Valen Cepak for Responsible Housing Growth

There’s what is easy, and there’s what is right. On very few days do those two things align.
This week at City Council, it would have been easy to sit quietly in the audience and let others handle the rezoning of the Windham tract just like the other city council candidates chose to do. It would have been easier to say nothing at all.
But that’s not who I am, and it never will be.
I’m not running to make everyone happy all the time. That’s not possible. I’m running to do what’s right for the future of College Station, so that generations to come can still enjoy the community we love calling home.
I stood up and spoke in front of Council urging them to rezone the land. Not because I enjoy disagreement, but because sometimes doing what’s right isn’t popular. We are short more than 4,200 single-family homes, and this was a real opportunity to start addressing that crisis. These homes will expand our housing stock and help bring home prices down.
As the Bush Institute at SMU has noted, homeownership is “the principal means of wealth accumulation for many Americans.” I want every hard working family who dreams of owning a home to have that opportunity right here in College Station.
I’d rather serve this community by doing what’s right than by choosing what’s easy or convenient. My actions will always speak louder than my words and I will continue choosing what is right over what is easy.”
